From time immemorial we have been aware of a Hindi phrase called, ‘Dharam-Sankat’,which essentially is the
HEART and BRAIN dilemma.
Let’s dig it a bit now to understand what it really is and why is it essential to understand, to make a choice by understanding to master the two (Heart and Brain).
It’s won’t be a tough part to correlate as most of us have most often been through the same stage.
Let’s take a few examples :
– One of our favourite shows of Indian Super Hero, ‘Shaktiman’ and the ‘Tution’ timings at the same time ?
– Our favourite series of ‘Alladin (Arabian Nights)’ or ‘He-Man (Masters of the Universe)’ or that game of cricket with friends ?
– Sleeping ‘5 mins’ more or ‘wake-up’ to get ready for school on time.
– Going for that important guest lecture in college or bunking it for a movie (first day first show) with best buddies ?
– Choosing the subject you want to really excel in or pleasing your parents by honouring the one they choose for you ?
– Buying a new cell phone with the FULL first salary or waiting for the next month salary credit ?
– Spending the Diwali with your girl friend or going home to your parents to lighten up your home with love and emotions ?
– Marrying the one you love or just giving in to the wishes of your elders ?
– Keep slogging in a job for a monthly pay cheque or take that move to pursue our passion ?
I hope every body could relate to some or the above questions above.
Now considering all of us to be matured individuals, can we figure out what in each scenario was was the best suited or fit ?
Well that’s exactly what the Heart and Brain dilemma is !
And for all good reasons today, let’s solve this riddle for once and for all.
Before getting into the “brain storming“
To take you through the understanding of ‘Heart’ and ‘Brain‘, I have strategically put the comparison questions in the order of your growth and age. To be more specific if you have been able to notice the pattern, the sequence follows from childhood to adult. the time when we watched superhero series and cartoons on television, to the time we look ahead to a family life of our own.
The reason behind such an approach is simple, our priorities change with time.
Being kids our priority was just studies and sports.
We grew up to just change the balance between them to focus just more on the academic path (as typical parents would want you to), to focus on getting an admission into a good college. Because, the general notion to a good life is a good job, with a good value pay cheque, a good house and a family.
We finish college and our priority shifts to job hunt and then the rat-race begins.
After job its that cupid call, Love which has no language. But I am sure there is a good deal of language and vocabulary exchange once we are into it, haha..
However, with all that being said. Have we really understood what to prioritize and when, yet ?
Let’s take it from the start.
Being a kid, the objective is to learn and be strong about our fundamentals. Build a strong base, so strong that it would hold the whole structure of our life. The objective is not just to dig the pit and lay the foundation, but to understand what are we intending to build and what do we want to make really. Is it that we are happy with a double storey apartment with a big garden and greenery all around? Or is it a multi story building that we aspire to build, besides a busy commercial street.
Both we know need a good deal of effort and might value the same. A multi story building in Kolkata,West Bengal might be of the same value as a Duplex at Andheri,Mumbai.
However, what I intend to emphasise on is to be clear on the objectives we have from our lives.
What do we really want?
Where do we want to be ? and then figure out,
What do I need to do, to get there?
These are just three easy set of questions everyone needs to ask oneself and then Quantify the Goals and then learn to Manage Time towards achieving that goal .
These are just the stepping stones to avoid that dilemma Heart and Brain.
The moment you start understanding your goals, you start to start drawing the layouts and blueprints to achieve it. It slowly gets easier to avoid that dilemma.
With all that being said, let’s look both with our heart and brain on the above scenarios we stumbled upon.
- If I have to get good grades, I have to study.
- If I want to play out and improve my field techniques and skills, I can’s sit at home watching television.
- If I want to reach school on time, I can not afford to disrespect my time.
- If I have to understand a specific topic, I can’t afford to miss that lecture.
- If I really love a subject, I really shouldn’t care where the heard is flocking.
- If that’s the last cell phone to be manufactured in time and if I was not to any better than it in any time ahead, may be I should really buy it ! But do you really think the first model of Motorola was better than the Moto Razor !!
- It’s the parents who gave you birth and always come first,, never afford to not to visit them. However if you have the right girl in your life, she is important too. Why not make it simpler, take her along to introduce her to your parents and celebrate the festival together with double the joy that you could have probably imagined.
- I don’t think I need to hint about marrying the one you love. Or probably, it was just a passing affair !!
- Jobs, everyone is into. But can we really be honest, at-least to ourselves that if we are really enjoying the stuff we do? And if we are, probably that’s the best you should do. And with the proper knowledge of financials and finance, it would help you to build on your dreams and reach your goals a lot faster.
It’s thus a very clear thing to understand. Follow your desires and the one you are really passionate about. If you know you want to do it, you got to do it !!
So don’t be in a dilemma, let the heart do what it’s best at i.e. keep pumping that hot blood within. Where as leave the brain to do the thing which it’s intended to be best at, i.e. thinking and planning the best road map for you to achieve your goals and then to help you act on it !!
Have a Life !!
& the most important,
